Mike Smith

An author I got to 'know' through Jason Jordan and as Mike's work as the editor of decomP, a great literary magazine that have published 2 of my poems! I didn't know much of Mike as an author, besides that he has written the novel Tell Christian I'm Sorry, and that he soon is ready with his second novel Tremendous Power Of Concentration, which he right now has published a part of, which you can read here, and believe me, it's a good read!!! It was after that read, my interest was sparked for Mike Smith the author!

Morten Andersen signs with Falcons

Yes, you heard right, NFL's most scoring player is back, the great Dane is ready for yet a season with the Atlanta Falcons. After their starting kicker Matt Prater had 2 terrible games (yesterday he missed 43 and 26 yards field goals, in a game they lost 7-13), the Falcons realized they needed reliability on the kicker position and who can deliver that better than Andersen. After a trial today, where he hit 13/13 kicks, from 50 yards and in, he convinced the training staff that old #5 would be a safe bet, so yet a year with a Dane in NFL, and this will be Andersen's 25th season in the NFL, go great Dane, best kicks!!!

Dire Straits

For the first time in I don't know how many years, I dug up one of my old old LPs, Dire Strait's self titled album, inspired by a book I'm reading right now, Ian Rankin's Resurrection Men, where a bunch of old vinyls are being played at a point. Though back to Dire Straits, damn how is this album smooth and delicious to listen to. Mark Knopfler's guitar is crisp and very enjoyable, well written music and even better played and his smooth and soothing vocals, amazing, this album is a small gem! I reckon this is going into heavy rotation here the next little while...

New Korn album

Just had a listen to the new Korn, apparently untitled, album, and hmmm.... wasn't that interesting, not that I am a fan of the band, and it is the first album of theirs I have listened to, the material I know from them are from the radio and TV. The album is mostly light industrial and alternative metal/rock, and the first impression went in one ear and out the other. Even though the music doesn't impress me much, the cover artwork is great!

Iron Maiden in a Sony ad

Almighty Iron Maiden are having their superb track 'Can I Play With Madness' (The music video in a not too good quality and a rather good live version, that really is catching the atmosphere and interaction at an Iron Maiden concert!) from the album "Seventh Son Of A Seventh Son" used in an advertisement for Sony's new HD 1080 equipment, check the ad out on YouTube and listen to the killer music, this rocks!

Packers won their first game

Green Bay Packers beat Philadelphia Eagles 16-13 in their first game, a game where Eagles were favorites, though Packers and kicker Mason Crosby didn't care. Even though Green Bay didn't get any offensive touchdowns, they embraced the victory with a defensive touchdown and 3 field goals from Crosby (53, 37, 42). Brett Favre didn't have his best day, he completed 23/42 for 206 yards and had one interception and 4 sacks.

Other scores of interest: Tennessee Titans beat Jacksonville Jaguars 13-10, go Vince Young. Pittsburgh Steelers beat Cleveland Browns 34-7, 'Big' Ben Rothlisberger threw 4 touchdowns, he seems to be back as we know him. Houston Texans beat Atlanta Falcons 20-3, seems like the Falcons really are suffering due to Vick's 'off the field interests'. Carolina Panthers beat Saint Louis Rams 27-13, this should be the season where Rams would be back as a Superbowl contender, though Jake Delhomme with 3 touchdown passes didn't seem impressed. New England Patriots seems stronger than ever, and has never had as many profiles on their team as now, scaring to see how they closed down New York Jets and won 38-14, without pushing the limits, they did it in a very calm manner, the Patriots is a serious Superbowl aspirant. And the most surprising result for me, so far this weekend, Denver Broncos were feeling the heat from Buffalo Bills and only won by one point, 15-14, I didn't see the match, though I expected the Broncos to be much stronger and a team that shouldn't get in trouble against Bills.

Right now I'm watching San Diego Charges vs. Chicago Bears, I'm cheering for Chargers, though the Bears defense is having a good grip on quarterback Philip Rivers and especially running back LaDainian Tomlinson, but I think LT will prevail, right now the Bears are ahead 3-0 with 7:27 to go of the 2nd quarter.

NFL pool at Megaweb Ultra

Waiting for this thing to kick off for real, gonna be fun!

Ouch

Colts thrashed Saints with 41-10, Brees and his O-line didn't seem up to standards, quite poor work from one of the best offenses last year, I sincerely hope it'll become better really soon!

Though Peyton and his boys just churned on from where they left last year, no mercy from the Colts this year either. Manning threw touchdowns to Reggie Wayne (2) and Marvin Harrison. Joseph Addai carried a TD for 2 yards, and kicker Adam Vinatieri is still to miss his first field goal in the RCA Dome.

Come Sunday so we can get some more football!

Joseph Phelps Vineyards

Tasted 3 wines from this vineyard from Napa Valley, California yesterday at a tasting, and was hooked on their style from the first sip. The first wine I tasted was their 2005 Sauvignon Blanc, a clean and crisp white wine, with a bit of oak in the nose, though very fresh and flowery, and the oak notes didn't overpower anything in the taste, a very mineral yet fruity and beautiful Sauvignon Blanc with a nice acidity, where the keyword is clean.

The 2004 Cabernet Sauvignon was overpowering, the nose was very very sweet, and filled with prunes, the same can be said about the taste, dark too ripe fruits, prunes, very ripe figs and almost no acid, and a lot of tannins of course, a very concentrated wine, hard to drink due to the lack of acidity. The lack of acidity was explained by they had a very hot summer in Napa Valley in 2004, so the grapes were too exposed to the sun.

Last but not least I tasted the vineyard's top wine Insignia, again a wine based on Cabernet Sauvignon and again a very very concentrated wine with a sweet, but very refined nose. The taste is overpowering, very sweet, with ripe black berries, some spice and a hint of vanilla notes, the wine doesn't have much acidity, though it is still very harmonic in the mouth and you don't miss the acid. The wine seems more like a dessert wine than a red wine, and if I had to pair it with food, it will be to dark chocolate, prunes, black berries and vanilla.
